Music

The Music program includes the study of theory, history, composition and performance at all grade levels. The Music department provides vocal and instrumental instruction as well as an appreciation for music of the church. There is also performance practice in a wide variety of musical styles, ancient to contemporary, sacred to secular, with ample opportunity to participate in a number of performing ensembles.
Grade 7 Music: Vocal and Theory
This course introduces the student to two and three-part choral music. Students begin to consolidate their understanding of the elements of music and receive instruction in music theory. Students also explore music of the Romantic period and consider the various roles of music in society. The class also prepares for public performances as a choral ensemble.
Grade 8 Music: Vocal and Theory
This course continues to consolidate understanding of the elements of music and to work with two and three-part music. Students receive instruction in music theory, consider the various roles of music in society and explore four historical periods of music through listening: Renaissance Baroque Classical and Romantic. The class also prepares for public performance as a choral ensemble.
Grade 7 & 8 Music: Instrumental
This course provides instruction in two instrumental groups: the string section and the brass and woodwind section. Students in Grade 7 are offered instruction on one of the major orchestral instruments continuing with the same instrument for their Grade 8 year. Basic techniques are covered with an emphasis on technical proficiency, sight reading, ensemble playing and musicality. Students will have the opportunity to perform in Rockway’s annual Christmas and Spring Concerts.
AMI1OH Instrumental Music – Band
Students continue to play the instrument they studied in Grade 7 and 8 instrumental class and will develop their playing techniques. Integrated components of listening, playing and creative activities are part of this course. Students will perform repertoire at school functions and in the surrounding constituency. RMC Requirement: Grade 7/8 Instrumental Music or consultation with the instructor.
AMS1OH Instrumental Music – Strings
Students continue to play the instrument they studied in Grade 7 and 8 instrumental class and will develop their playing techniques. Integrated components of listening, playing and creative activities are part of this course. Students will also perform repertoire at school functions and in the surrounding constituency. RMC Requirement: Grade 7/8 Instrumental Music or consultation with the instructor.
AMU1OH Music
This course emphasizes the performance of music at a level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill. Student learning will include participating in creative activities and listening perceptively. Students will also be required to develop a thorough understanding of the language of music, including the elements, terminology and history. Students will also perform repertoire at school functions and in the surrounding constituency.
AMO2O1 Instrumental Music – Orchestra
Students will continue to learn to play in an ensemble. Integrated components of listening, playing and creative activities are part of this course. Students will also perform repertoire at school functions and in the surrounding constituency. RMC Requirement: Grade 9 Instrumental Music or consultation with the instructor. Students are encouraged to take this course for the full year.

Students will also be required to develop a thorough understanding of the language of music including the elements, terminology and history. Students will also perform repertoire at school functions and in the surrounding constituency.
AMO3O1 Instrumental Music – Orchestra
Students will continue to learn to play in ensembles. Integrated components of listening, playing and creative activities are part of this course. Students will also perform repertoire at school functions and in the surrounding constituency. RMC Requirement: AMO2OI or consultation with the instructor. Students are encouraged to take this course for the full year.
AMV3O1 Vocal/Choral Music
Students will receive instruction in vocal technique, sight reading and choral literature and will sing in an ensemble. Through repertoire study, students will gain a deeper understanding of the elements of music. Students will also contribute to the administration of the choir by assisting with concert planning, concert set-up and music organization. Students will perform repertoire at school functions the surrounding constituency and perform at various music festivals. MET Prerequisite: Music Grade 9 or 10 Open or consultation with the instructor. Students are encouraged to take this course for the whole year.
Grade 12 Music and Orchestra
Students in grade 12 are strongly encouraged to sing or play in either AMV4N (Senior Choir) or AMO4N (Senior Orchestra) during their final year.
AMX3M1 Music-External* (Conservatory)
Students can receive one university/college destination credit for completing Grade VII Practical & Grade I Rudiments from the Royal Conservatory of Music Toronto or Grade 7 Practical and Theory 3 from Conservatory Canada London.
AMX4M1 Music-External* (Conservatory)
Students can receive one university/college destination credit for completing Grade VIII Practical and Grade II Rudiments from the Royal Conservatory of Music Toronto or Grade 8 Practical and Theory 4 from Conservatory Canada London.
